SOCIETY RED
Fans beware!

These guys are ready-made to rock. No lead intro needed because they have all been successful at one point in their career. They are made up of former Burn Season front man Damien Starkey, former Puddle of Mudd guitarist Paul Phillips, former Shinedown bassist Brad Stewart, Dizzi Devereux on guitar, and Brad Moxey on drums. Talk about a total package. It won’t take long before this band makes it to the top.
“The response has been undeniable” says Damien, “Our fans have already proven themselves to be very dedicated, and that to me is what makes bands successful.” So successful that their formula for writing has already given them bad-ass tunes like “Love & Hate,” “Chasin the Reason,” and “Dirty Things.” We were lucky enough to catch up with the Jacksonville, FL band and here’s what they had to say.
CrankIt: What can one expect from a SOCIETY RED show?
Dizzi: All I can say is not only do you get a high energy, bullet proof, good ol’ jack daniels, freight train in yo face, awesome rock show. You get a band that ain’t scared of the fans! After every show, the boys and I spend the rest of the night partying with all the peeps that support what we do! It’s all about the fans.
Brad: WHISKEY!!!!
CrankIt: Your fans seem very passionate about what you are doing. You have some nice looking girls on your page?
Dizzi: you mean aside from the girls? Ha! It’s a meetin place for people to get our twitter updates (@societyredjax btw), download music, take a look at their tagged pics and stay up on what’s goin on with us. Plus we’re sexxay.
Brad: We are VERY PASSIONATE about our band and I think people pick up on that when they hear the songs or see us live. I think that draws them in at first. Also, the lyrics are very relatable and DO have meaning, they are drawn from things we’ve actually been through, the good, the bad and the ugly.
We also try to involve our fans as much as possible. We want them to feel like they know us and we want to know them. We’ve done things like having them send in photos of themselves, we’ve done our own reality SOCIETV segments so they can get to know us too. It makes for a healthy relationship between band and fans.
CrankIt: Tell me about your lifestyle on the road? What’s the most interesting thing to happen?
Dizzi: aaahh the road. Cheap hotels, booze and chicks. Guess you could say the “road lifestyle” is always an adventure. It helps that we all don’t get on each other’s nerves for the most part. But, when ya spend time doin what ya love with 3 of your best friends in close quarters, ya always pull together and deliver night after night.
Brad: Me, I just curl up with a good book, and eat tofu, no really its good for you, seriously it’s good for you they tell me. Really it is. What?
CrankIt: Best Society show so far?
Dizzi: Man that’s a tough one to lock down. We have been fortunate to have been invited to perform with sooo many great people I dunno if I can pick one. What ever you say Stewart…. I’ll concur. Haha
Brad: We have had a lot of great ones to speak of. I would have to pick two that really stand out. The first one was my first show after joining the band. We opened for Sevendust in Ft. Walton Beach in front of a packed house and we killed it!! Their fans were very receptive and just kept feeding the fire that was going on in front of them. It was a gas for sure.
We also played at Floyd’s with Saliva a few months later. We had a rocky show a few days prior in Jacksonville and were seeking redemption, and redemption is exactly what we got. It was just one of those shows that gave me the feeling I got when I first started playing live. It’s that feeling that I chase everyday that I’m alive.
CrankIt: What bands are cool to hang with that you have opened for?
Dizzi: Sevendust by far! That camp has always treated us like family and we always look forward to hangin with them. Society Red + Sevendust = hazy mornins tryin to figure out who ate the food then left it regurgitated next to the empty bottle. And when did my bass player turn into a line backer, bull dog! Love ya bro :)
Brad: Ha, a line backer… I think I was also a break-dancer and wrestler too at any given show we’ve done with them. I just get excited to see and play shows with old friends like Sevendust. Then add some Jager, some more Jager and you get my alter ego. It just happens…What the hell is tofu?
CrankIt: I noticed you have a Viper Room date coming up? What is the story with playing this world famous venue?
Dizzi: Well we have been fortunate to become involved with our friend/manager Travis of Black Candle Management. And he has put together a kick ass showcase with top industry figures for us! Thanx trav ruv u long time! We will be playing in LA at the Viper Room on January 13th because of his belief that we will melt faces with our badassery! Nuff said
Brad: Showcasing my friend. I’m just stoked that the band is finally playing in LA, it’s a milestone for us. Can’t freaking wait!!
CrankIt: Are you lovers or fighters of both?
Dizzi: Fighter, I’m normally the first one to start it and last one to leave.
Brad: Fighter for sure. It makes me ill when folks don’t stand up for themselves or fight for what they believe in, I’ve never been one to lay down, it’s just not me.
CrankIt: In your opinion what separates you from all the other Rock acts out there?
Dizzi: I’d say our relentless attitude and belief in ourselves, and knowing that there are hundreds of rock bands fighting for the same thing... I think that in a battle of who wants this shit more we would win. There would also be a lot of blood, (please see previous question) no one makes us bleed our own blood... ha!
Brad: Well we have a rapper in the band, no wait, a dj spinning, or better yet, a chick bass player, that and we’re from another country...I think I just answered the question.
CrankIt: What have you been listening to lately? Are there any new bands that you really dig?
Dizzi: The Muse, I have always been a sucker for talented three piece bands who have a sound like a unicorn! – constant inside joke with me and Damien.
Brad: I can’t seem to get Appetite for Destruction out of my player, and believe me, that’s not a bad thing!
CrankIt: What is your advice for young bands trying to make it in the music industry?
Dizzi: write as many songs as you can... no seriously that’s still not enough. And never give up cause do’ers WIN , and quiters get trampled. Always build your bridges and never ever forget anyone is everyone, you never know who may be checkin ya out so always be on your game!
Brad: Yes, it is all about the songs. If you have great songs, all of the other stuff seems to fall into place. Write songs that move you first and foremost, it will be hard to be believable live or on tape if you’re not moved every time you perform.
Also, eat a lot of chicken, its good for you. Forget what I said about Tofu.
